By Michelle Park — Gave up sugar. Felt great. Ate a donut. Did not die.
Last updated: May 2026
I quit sugar for 30 days. No cookies. No cake. No soda. No hidden sugar in sauces or bread. I read every label. I said no to dessert at dinner parties. I brought my own snacks to the movies.
The first week was hard. I craved everything. I was irritable. I wanted to quit.
The second week got easier. The cravings faded. I stopped thinking about sugar.
By the third week, I felt different. My energy was steady. No afternoon crash. My skin looked clearer. I was sleeping better.
I thought: this is it. I am free. I will never eat sugar again.
On day 31, I ate a donut. Not because I craved it. Because I wanted to see what would happen.
It was fine. I did not spiral. I did not binge. I did not wake up the next day craving more sugar. I just ate a donut and moved on.
What I Learned
Sugar is not poison.
I treated sugar like a drug I needed to quit forever. That made it more powerful. When I ate the donut and nothing bad happened, the fear went away.
Extreme rules are hard to keep.
I could probably live without sugar forever. I do not want to. I like birthday cake. I like ice cream in the summer. A life without those things is not a life I want.
My body got used to less sugar.
After 30 days, sweet things tasted sweeter. A donut that used to be normal now felt like a lot. I ate half. That was enough.
What Stuck
| What Did Not Stick | What Stuck |
|---|---|
| No sugar ever | Less sugar most days |
| Reading every label | Being aware of hidden sugar |
| Saying no to all dessert | Having dessert sometimes |
| Feeling deprived | Feeling in control |
I do not eat donuts every day. I do not eat dessert after every meal. But I do not run from sugar either.
I just eat it less often. And when I do, I enjoy it.
What I Am Not Saying
I am not saying sugar is healthy. It is not.
I am not saying everyone should eat sugar. Some people need to avoid it for medical reasons.
I am just saying: I quit sugar for 30 days. I felt great. Then I ate a donut. The world did not end.
The Bottom Line
I quit sugar for a month. I felt better. Then I ate a donut.
I do not eat donuts every day. But I do not avoid them either.
The goal is not perfection. The goal is balance.
